A Month Filled With Gratitude

Happy 11/30 everyone. I, for one, can't believe the month is over. It seemed to go by so fast. Before you know it we will be working on goals for the new year.

As most of you know, I focused on gratitude for the month. It was a profound experience for me. After a month of really struggling with regards to many things in my life, the gratitude experiment shifted my focus and opened my heart. I went back to meditating. I started rolling with life's punches. It was a beautiful journey.
This week has brought both the anniversary of my mother's death and changes in my personal life (nothing bad...just change). With that, the new-found gratitude taking root in my heart was challenged. Some days, I fared well. And others...others were profoundly challenging. At first this shift rattled me. But, I woke this morning remembering that this is life...we have our ups and we have our downs.
And this is writing, too....
We will have periods of great joy, great productivity. And there will be times of profound angst and sadness. It is just the way of things.
For me, it's about not attaching to any of it - not the joy or the sadness. It's about enjoying each moment, practicing discernment and detachment, and moving forward.
I've decided to extend my gratitude practice for the rest of the year as I work to continue to establish this habit.

Excitement on the Horizon!

Hi all -
As predicted, this week is CRAZY busy! In a very good way. I am teaching a class on writing to a bunch of kids all week. Talk about FUN FUN FUN!!! I have missed working directly with kids (the new job doesn't have as much of that as I would like). Anyway, theclass is a webinar for a few hours every night, making the week busier than usual, even for me! As a result, the blogging will be sparse.
But, I wanted to sneak in and tell you what's coming up in the next few weeks:

  • WINTER WONDERS is released - and yes, my short story will be out!
  • HUGE Online signing party with several other fab authors - this will include limited holiday pricing on PAPERBACK copies of my books!
  • A HUGE giveaway with a bunch of other authors, including chances to get a HUGE Amazon giftcard in time for the holidays
  • For my writer friends - Compass Press will be holding an author search contest in early January, with the winner(s) getting a publishing contract!!! Start getting those manuscripts ready

Back on the Chain: Location, Location, Location


For some reason, whenever I think of the blog chain, my mind goes to the word "chain gang"...and from there to Les Miserable. I know, I am very strange.

Anyway, since I know have Les Miserable on my brain I thought I'd share this fabulouso trailer for the upcoming movie:


I am SO DARN EXCITED for this.

Okay, back to the Blog Chain. This round was started by Alyson who asked the following: 

How important is setting when crafting a story? How do you choose where your stories take place? How do you research setting? Do you have to have been somewhere in order to write about it? What are some memorable settings from books you've read?

I love this question. I am a HUGE setting person. I wasn't always that way, but my editor is a settings-nut, so now I am too. I carefully pick where my stories take place based on a few things:
Atmosphere
My knowledge of the place (and yes, I will go research places in person when possible)
Time
Story-themes

Setting is something that, for me, is like another character in the book, adding to the emotional context of the story. That said, I would not say I am a strong setting writer. It is something I always need to be mindful of and work on. But with the help of my editor, I am getting better!

Gratitude Challenge

Hi all! I have been a bad blogger - ignoring this poor blog all week. I missed a Blog Chain post, forgot to annouce a contest and yea...
Just spaced out. I've been doing that a lot lately; the by-product over a little too much on my plate. As it has been all year.
One thing I have not lost sight of is my yearly tradition of using November to cultivate gratitude in many forms. It has been a great experience for me as I clean up some of my "stuff", work on my own gratitude and share a sense of Thanksgiving with others...
Which leads me to this post.
I decided to up-the-ante in my own practice of gratitude, including more than my daily journalling, meditation practices and facebook posts. I have decided to take a few moments between now and Thanksgiving next week to individually thank everyone in my contact list. That's write, I am emailing my contacts and reaching out to let them know they are appreciated.
And I am encouraging you to do the same. Remind the people in your life, aquantainaces, friends, business associates, family - remind them all of the meaning they have had in your life. If you harbor grief, release it and focus on the gratitude.
At least, that is what I am doing: Making a conscious decision to live from a place of gratitude. And tell others.
Maya Angelou is quoted as saying "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
I want to be a source of joy for others. Letting people know why you are grateful for them is one step.

Thank you my friends....

I was feeling very nestalgic yesterday as I was working on the final installment for the Requiem series, thinking about my friendships that have changed and left over the past year. See, I have been through a lot of change this year. Nothing bad...just change. And it has thrown me off my game a bit. I don't make close friends easily. So when I do, they are very precious to me. And when then change, I don't always adjust well - or gracefully. As I was thinking and musing about this, the Glee version of one of my favorite songs from Wicked came on - For Good.
